When high viscosity material is pumped from 200 kg drums, the pump absorbs a large amount of air. This can cause the material to flow slowly, making it difficult for the pump to keep up with the rising pressure. To avoid this problem, a follower plate is lowered into the barrel of the drum.
The Follower Plate

In a grease container, a follower plate is a heavy disc that rests on the surface of the grease and assists its downward movement toward a dispensing pump inlet located at the bottom of the container. This device is usually used in conjunction with an air-operated grease pump. It’s not the cheapest accessory, but it can save you money in the long run. It eliminates air pockets and aids pump priming. The flange on the lid is rubber-covered to minimise waste, while a handle on the top allows for easy removal from an emtpy drum. A follower plate with a large mouth, however, can be a pain to remove. So be careful. The Intake Socket

The intake socket of the follower plate is an important part of the process in pumping highly viscous material. It has to be closed tight to the wall of the barrel by a soft sealing lip and lowered slowly into the material. If this is done too fast, the material squeezes out at the side and a large amount of waste is produced. Alternatively, hardened material may be carried into the material by the follower plate and this causes a breakdown of the process. This can also happen if the intake socket is not closed tightly enough. To solve these problems a sophisticated control system is used to ensure that the amount carried by the pump and the distance lowered by the follower plate are precisely equal. This prevents crumbs and air from being pumped into the material, saving money on production costs and spare parts.
